At the annual RGS-IBG conference in London, August 2024, the HPGRG has chosen to sponsor the following sessions:

HPGRG Call for Session Sponsorship, RGS-IBG Annual Conference 2024

The History and Philosophy of Geography Research Group (HPGRG) invites applications to sponsor sessions at this year’s RGS-IBG Annual Conference. Sessions should address topics relating to contemporary philosophies, theories and methods related to geography and/or the history and philosophy of geography and associated fields. We welcome proposals for sessions that use innovative or creative formats.

The RGS-IBG Annual Conference 2024 will take place from Tuesday 27thto Friday 30thAugust 2024 at the Society’s Headquarters in London. The 2024 Conference Chair is Professor Stephen Legg (University of Nottingham, UK) and the conference theme is Mapping. Please submit your session proposals for HPGRG sponsorship by Friday26th January 2024, to peter.martin1@nottingham.ac.uk.

We will notify applicants of the committee’s decision as soon as possible afterwards, no later than Friday 2ndFebruary. Final details of the session, including details of the authors, titles and abstracts of all the papers, must be submitted to the conference organisers by Friday 1stMarch 2024.

Please note that any sessions sponsored by the HPGRG will require the session organisers to provide a short (200-300 word) summary of their sessions for inclusion in the HPGRG Annual Newsletter.

Committee changes following the AGM

We have a number of out-going committee members following the most recent AGM.

The Chair, Heike Jöns, thanked Pauline Couper for her exemplary work as HPGRG Undergraduate Prize Coordinator over two terms from 2013 to 2019. She also thanked Thomas Jellis for having built up the new HPGRG website and Twitter account and for looking after these with great commitment and dedication from 2013 to 2019.

The Research Group welcomed Emily Hayes to the committee as Undergraduate Prize Coordinator and, following some discussion, the  role of Website Editor will now be merged with that of the Communications Officer (Michiel Van Meeteren).

We hope to appoint a Postgraduate Liaison Officer in the near future.

Call for Sessions: RGS-IBG Annual Conference 2019

The History and Philosophy of Geography Research Group (HPGRG) invites suggestions for sponsored sessions at the RGS-IBG Annual International Conference 2019 in London from Wednesday, 28 to Friday, 30 August 2019. The conference will focus on Geographies of trouble / geographies of hope and be chaired by Professor Hester Parr (University of Glasgow).

We welcome suggestions for sessions across our remit, interpreted broadly, as the histories and/or philosophies of human geography, physical geography and associated fields.

HPGRG sponsorship can provide promotion for your session, help manage timetabling clashes, and enable bidding for funding for research group guests and awards for postgraduate presenters in your sessions.

Please send the following information to Federico Ferretti, Secretary of HPGRG by Tuesday, 18 December 2019:

 – title of proposed session, name of organizers, and abstract of c. 200-250 words

– indication of proposed format, e.g. papers or panel discussion, number of papers, use of discussants; for possibilities of session formats, see https://www.rgs.org/research/annual-international-conference/programme-(1)/guidance-for-session-organisers/

– number of 1h 40 minutes slots requested

– possible co-sponsorship with other research groups

 We will inform session organizers about HPGRG sponsorship and further procedures by Monday, 7 January 2019. The deadline for submitting complete sessions to HPGRG is Friday, 8 February 2019 for submission to the Society by Friday, 15 February 2019. This would leave about one month for session organisers to send out a call for papers and finalise the session programme.

Committee changes

At our most recent AGM, held in Cardiff, we had a number of out-going committee members. Our Chair, Paul Simpson, and Secretary, Isla Forsyth, came to the end of their extended term (2014-2018); our Communications Officer, Vanessa Schofield, reached the end of her term (2015-2018), and our Postgraduate Liaison Officer, Diana Beljaars, stepped down due to no longer being a postgraduate (2016-2018). We thank them for all their work on the committee.

We now welcome our in-coming committee members. Our Chair will be Heike Jöns, who has had a long-standing involvement with the Research Group. In addition, we welcome Federico Ferretti as Secretary, and Michiel Van Meeteren as Communications Officer. We hope to appoint a Postgraduate Liaison Officer in the near future.

Two new committee roles

The HPGRG AGM will take place in Cardiff at this year’s RGS-IBG Annual Conference (provisionally) on Wednesday 29th August 13.10-14.25. In advance of that we are now inviting individuals to express their interest in two committee roles that will become available at the AGM as the current role holders’ terms come to an end. We are looking for a new Chair and a new Secretary for the committee. These positions are both three-year appointments in the first instance, with the possibility of standing for a further three years at the end of that term. Please note, for the positions of Chair and Secretary candidates must be Fellows of the RGS-IBG.

Nominations for election should be made via e-mail to the current Secretary Isla Forsyth and include details of two nominators (which will be verified prior to the AGM). Nominators need not be Fellows/Members of the RGS-IBG or be existing HPGRG committee members.

Nominations must be made by Monday 13th August 2018.

The History and Philosophy of Geography Research Group (HPGRG) invites suggestions for 12 sponsored sessions at the RGS-IBG Annual International Conference 2018 in Cardiff. The conference theme is “Geographical landscapes / changing landscapes of geography” and will be chaired by Professor Paul Milbourne.

We welcome suggestions for sessions across our remit, interpreted broadly, as the histories and/or philosophies of human geography, physical geography and associated fields. We particularly welcome session proposals that seek to engage with geography’s theoretical and philosophical underpinnings, past, present, and future.

HPGRG sponsorship can provide promotion for your session, help manage timetabling clashes, and enable bidding for funding for research group guests and awards for postgraduate presenters in your sessions.

Please send the following information to HPGRG Chair Paul Simpson by 15 January 2018:

– title of proposed session (up to 15 words), name and affiliation of organizers, and abstract of c. 200-300 words;

– indication of proposed format (e.g. papers or panel discussion, number of papers, use of discussants; for possibilities of session formats, see here);

– number of 1h 40 minutes slots requested (note, sessions may not normally occupy more than two timeslots and co-sponsorship with other research groups will only be offered where there is a compelling case for such an arrangement.

We will inform session organizers about HPGRG sponsorship and further procedures by the end of January. The deadline for submitting complete sessions to the Society is 16 February 2018.

Please note that any sessions sponsored by the HPGRG will require the session organizers to provide a short (200-300 word) summary of what happened in their sessions for inclusion in the HPGRG Autumn 2018 newsletter.

The History and Philosophy of Geography Research Group (HPGRG) invites suggestions for 12 sponsored sessions at the RGS-IBG Annual International Conference 2017 in London from 30 August to 1 September 2017. The conference theme is “Decolonising geographical knowledges: opening geography out the world” and will be chaired by Professor Sarah Radcliffe.

We welcome suggestions for sessions across our remit, interpreted broadly, as the histories and/or philosophies of human geography, physical geography and associated fields. We particularly welcome session proposals that seek to engage with geography’s theoretical and philosophical underpinnings, past, present, and future.

HPGRG sponsorship can provide promotion for your session, help manage timetabling clashes, and enable bidding for funding for research group guests and awards for postgraduate presenters in your sessions.

Please send the following information to HPGRG Secretary Isla Forsyth and HPGRG Chair Paul Simpson by 16 January 2017:

– title of proposed session (up to 15 words), name and affiliation of organizers, and abstract of c. 200-300 words

– indication of proposed format (e.g. papers or panel discussion, number of papers, use of discussants; for possibilities of session formats, see here)
